How I’m Surviving Winter

Hey everyone!

Happy New Year! Before I start this post, I have to say a big thank you to all of my readers because 2019 was the best year of blogging for me. I received the most amount of views I ever have in all my years of blogging, and I’m seriously so grateful. One of my resolutions for 2019 was to achieve this, and I’m so thankful because I wasn’t too sure it was possible. There’s been lots of changes and new adventures this past year, and I want to express my gratitude that you’ve all stuck with me!

As most of you know, I finally live in a place where it actually gets really cold and snowy. Let’s just say that this November I had to seriously start reevaluating my wardrobe… crop tops with a fuzzy jacket put on top were just not going to cut it! Since then, I’ve made major upgrades and wanted to share with you the items that have kept me warm all winter long.

The Super Puff Long in High Gloss Black from Aritzia: Let me tell you… this jacket has been my saving grace in New York. I’m seriously in love with this puffer, and it’s going to be in my closet for years and years to come. It’s made out of great down material that’s designed to keep you warm in -40 degree weather. I wear this jacket pretty much everyday now, and it feels like I’m wrapped up in my duvet. The hood is detachable and the sides can be unbuttoned for a cute side slit if you want it to be more breathable. I wear an XS in this jacket for reference. Many of them are sold out online right now, but I definitely recommend shopping at a local Aritzia or checking their website if you’re looking for the most adorable, stylish down jacket around.

UO Tatum Turtleneck Sweater: I have this sweater in black, and it’s so flattering and warm. It’s oversized, but still the perfect length where it looks great with jeans. I’ve added so many sweaters to my wardrobe this year, and this one is a staple. It’s currently on sale in red on Urban, but I’ll link a similar one in black here!

Doc Martens: Alright, confession time: I don’t own a pair of snow boots. I was thinking about getting a pair, but winter rolled around and I found myself reaching for my Docs each morning before going out into the snow. They honestly worked perfectly since they have a thick sole that gains traction well. I’ve been wearing my 1460 patent pair, but I just got the Leona Boots in black and am putting them to good use! The great thing about Dr. Martens is that they last forever. I’ve had my patent ones since 2014, and six years later, they’re still serving me well.

Beanies: My ears can get really cold and start to ache, especially when it’s windy, so I’ve gotten a couple since moving. They’re really cute and easy to wear with any outfit, but also I’ve found that they can be a real game changer when it’s cold and you’re spending time outdoors. I usually throw one in my bag with a pair of gloves if I’m going into the city for added warmth if I need it. Urban has a bunch that are super cute and come in different styles.

Besides these items, other warm accessories like scarves, gloves, and thick socks are great and definitely serve as essential pieces. I hope this post gave you some recommendations for either investment pieces or more ways to layer up!

Feel free to leave any post ideas that you’d like to see in the comments below. 🙂

Talk to you soon!

Christmas Gift Guide 2019

Hey everyone!

It’s one of my favorite times of the year with Christmas just around the corner. I am so excited for the holidays this year; I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I finally live someplace cold and snowy, making it really feel like Christmas! I’m sure a ton of you have seen these posts from many bloggers, but I decided to compile a gift guide of several different items that I think would make great gifts this holiday season. Enjoy!

Amped Fleece Throw Blanket from Urban Outfitters: This blanket is the best! It’s so soft and makes a great throw blanket for a bed or couch. I have one and I use it every day. They also come in a variety of colors, making it perfect to gift to anyone you love!

Scrunchies from Free People: I love all of the scrunchies Free People offers, and I find them to be really great quality. They have a deal that allows you to buy 3 for $12 so that you can mix and match styles. I got some of these for Christmas last year, and have a couple on my list this year, too.

Personalized Name Necklace from BELKYMood on Etsy: These kinds of necklaces are super popular right now and make the most special gifts. My sister and I bought my mom one of these for her birthday a few months ago, and she loves it. The chain is so delicate and sparkly, and you can choose the color, length, and initials on the chain.

Bobbi Brown Love in the Afternoon Eyeshadow Palette: This palette is so pretty and has a great selection of neutral, pinky colors to shades that are darker and perfect for a night out. Bobbi Brown has great cosmetics in general, and this would be an awesome gift to receive or give.

UO Willow Fuzzy Drawstring Teddy Jacket: I’ve talked about this jacket in the past, but it’s seriously one of the best! It’s so easy to style and wear. It’s very soft and comfortable while still being extremely cute.

Benefit Cosmetics Babe On Board Mini Face Palette: This palette is so pretty and a great gift since it comes with a blush, bronzer, and highlighter. It’s a great essential for any makeup bag.

Rifle Paper Co. Garden Party Monogram Mug: Anthropologie always has the best mugs, and Rifle Paper Co. always has the prettiest designs, so this is a collab. made in heaven! It’s a perfect cup for any coffee or tea lover.

Titania Post Earring Set from Anthropologie: These earrings are all so delicate and sweet! They have a few different styles to choose from.

Lyra Monogram Trinket Dish: This would be such a nice gift to give someone! I feel like it would be really cute to put a little necklace or bracelet in it and then give it as a gift if you want to give something extra special.

Chunky Oversized Hoop Earrings from Madewell: I got these earrings over the summer, and I still wear them weekly to this day. They are the perfect chunky hoop, and I find that they’re good quality and don’t oxidize. Hoop earrings are a great staple piece, and these would be a perfect gift!

I hope this gift guide gets you excited for the holidays and gives you some present ideas! Who else is excited for Christmas day?

Life in New York – A Happy Update

Hey everyone!

It’s been a few weeks since I last blogged, and I feel like I should give you all an update before I start posting my regular content again. Life has been crazy and busy, but also wonderful, and I haven’t really talked about my life in New York since moving here.

I really love school and getting to study the business side of the fashion industry is such a rewarding experience. It’s crazy to step aside from it all and think about how I’m on a path that’s going to lead me to working in fashion. It’s surreal, and I feel so grateful to be living in one of my favorite cities in the world.

I’ve met so many great people here, a lot of them who are also fashion studies majors (if any of you are reading this… you know how much I adore you). It’s so enlightening and special being able to talk to people who have the same passion as you but are all on their own, unique path.

I have a lot more free time now that I’m not in class for six hours everyday, and it’s insane to think that less than sixth months ago I’d sit in a classroom for hours on end. I love the freedom that college brings, but I do still spend a fair amount of my time studying. No surprise, there; we all know I’d work 24/7 if I could.

When it comes to living on my own and being so far away from family, I’m handling it a lot better than I expected. Time aren’t always the easiest; I miss my parents, my twin sister and my cats SO much, and there are times where I’d do anything to be with them for just a few minutes. However, I would not trade this experience for the world because living here is a dream come true. I’m getting a lot more used to life in New York, and usually visit the city every week. Speaking of, I know how to navigate the metro system by myself, and I’m honestly quite proud. I love how easy and quick it is to get into Manhattan.

Overall, I’m really happy with my experience here so far! I know there’s so much more in store for me, too; it’s only been about three months – who knows what the future holds?

I’m heading out tomorrow morning to my new home in Seattle (yay!) for Thanksgiving break, and I’m planning on cranking out a LOT of blog posts while I’m there. If there’s anything you want to see, be sure to leave a comment down below.

I’m endlessly grateful for all of you. Thanks for sticking with me and being such great readers!

The New NYC Nordstrom

Hey everyone!

Last week, the Manhattan Nordstrom flagship store opened, and it’s something I’ve been looking forward to visiting for months now. It had officially opened on Thursday, and I decided to go to see what it was all about. It was far from disappointing. The store is all women’s clothing and accessories, with a lower level that has baby and home items. There’s also restaurants and cafes scattered around. Oh, and it’s seven floors. Yep, you heard that right. Seven floors. When can I move in?

There’s a variety of different designers on each level. To be honest, it’s a bit overwhelming because the store is so big and carries so many different brands. It’s kind of like a museum; you could spend days on end going through the store and finding new labels and pieces that you haven’t seen before. It’s truly amazing.

I bought two tops when I was there (one being the white turtleneck in the picture above), and the dressing rooms were also super cool. Everything is very high-tech; there was a panel towards the back of the dressing room where you could call an employee, order a different size, etc. One of the walls in the room also had a full length mirror and pedestal underneath it which is perfect for when you’re trying on clothes! There definitely was a lot of thought that was put into the Nordstrom when it was built.

The location of the store is super great, too. It’s within walking distance of Central Park, and I can only imagine how cute it’s going to look pretty soon with all of the Christmas decorations.

Although the store was super busy and packed, I seriously had such a good time visiting it. I’m so glad that we finally have a Nordstrom here in New York, and I know there are plenty of purchases to be made in the future…

Here’s what I’m wearing:

Urban Outfitters Mock Neck Sweater in Cream (only available in gray right now) from Nordstrom

BDG Girlfriend High-Waisted Longline Jean

Four Favorites: October Beauty 2019

Hey everyone!

I haven’t posted about some of my favorite products in awhile, so I thought now would be a great opportunity to share a few I’ve been loving! I only have four products to talk to you about today, but I’ll be sure to keep you updated as I continue to discover beauty I love.

Feel Pure Anywhere Balm in Rose: I love this “anywhere” balm that I picked up at Anthropologie. I originally bought this lip balm because I loved the minty scent of it, but I can promise that the formula of it is super great and nourishing. I keep it in my bag when I’m heading out for the day, whether that’s to class or the city, and I also keep it nearby when I’m at home. It’s made with all natural ingredients which is awesome.

Philosophy Vanilla Coconut Shower Gel: I found this shower gel at TJ Maxx when I was home shopping for my dorm room, and I really love the scent of it. I’ve had Philosophy beauty products in the past, and they’ve always been great quality. It’s a three in one product, so you can also use it as bubble bath or shampoo, but I personally have only used it as shower gel. I can’t find this exact scent online, but I’ll link a similar one here. It’s the perfect addition to my shower caddy.

Maybelline Waterproof Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara: There’s no surprise over here that I’m a big mascara gal; you can pretty much always find me with long, coated lashes. I love the look of really long and thick lashes, so when one of my suitemates turned to me the other day and asked, “How do you get your eyelashes so thick?” I felt truly honored. As much as I love my Glossier lash slick, sometimes I want a more amplified lash look. I tried this mascara out awhile ago and liked it, so I’ve given it a go again. It’s honestly amazing; I can layer it several times without it getting clumpy, and it holds a curl all day. The only downside is that I notice some smudges towards my eyebrows where the top of my lashes touch (but if that’s the price I pay for long eyelashes, how bad is it, really?).

13 Moons Sugar Moon Perfume by Olivine Atelier: This perfume honestly smells amazing, and I’ve loved it even before I had my own bottle. We started carrying this brand and some of their perfumes where I used to work, and this was the scent that always caught my attention. I’d put some on me from the tester as I was working, and I always loved the smell and how unique it was. The notes in it are cassis, lily, sandalwood, white amber, and clean musk. The packaging is also super beautiful, and the perfume is made of all natural, clean ingredients. The bottom of the bottle has crystals in it too, which makes it even prettier and great if you love what crystals stand for/believe in their powers. You can also get a sample from the website for $5 if you want to try it out first before committing to a full bottle.

Thank you so much for reading, and I hope this gave you some new beauty products to try out! What are you currently loving? Let me know in the comments. 🙂

Recent Urban Outfitters Purchases – Fall 2019

Hey everyone!

It’s been awhile since I’ve written a blog post, so I first want to apologize for the lack of content I’ve been creating. I moved to New York about a month ago, and I’ve been acclimating to life and school here. I’m honestly having the best time ever, and it’s a real dream come true to be living and studying in my favorite city! All of that put aside though, I really miss blogging and am so focused on getting back to it. It feels great to sit here and take time to write again.

I’ve made a few Urban Outfitters purchases lately, all of which have been pieces that I love and am so excited to wear. I hope these give you some inspiration for fall or show you some fun new pieces that you can add to your wardrobe.

Embroidered Wildflower Crop Top: I absolutely adore this top and have been wearing it so much since I got it. It’s perfect to pair with high waisted jeans or a long satin skirt. The flowers embroidered on it are so pretty and sweet, and it’s the perfect length for a crop top. If you’re looking for a new, cute little graphic tee, check this one out.

Sierra Sheer Smocked Cropped Top in Mauve: This blouse is so beautiful, and I was immediately drawn to it when I first saw it in the store. The color online says mauve, but it’s this stunning purple color which would look great on every skin tone. It honestly gives me sugar plum fairy vibes; I love it!

BDG Love Is Forever Overdyed Sweatshirt: I’ve had my eye on this since I first saw it online, and I’m really glad that I picked it up because it’s so cute! The flowers on the front and back are super pretty, and I honestly think the quote is beautiful. I think it’s so easy to find graphic tees with random phrases on it nowadays, but ones with special and sentimental messages are always a bonus. Lastly, the sweatshirt is a perfect shade of light blue.

Willow Fuzzy Drawstring Teddy Jacket in Pink: Urban sold this jacket in last year’s winter collection, and I remember thinking that they looked so cute and cozy. I’m so glad they’re back this year, and I’m in love with this pink one (so much so that I found which stores had it in my size and went to the East Village to pick it up). I love that it’s oversized and fuzzy. I also really like that it has the bright pink drawstrings at the bottom; it adds a nice accent color to the blush exterior.

BDG Girlfriend High-Waisted Longline Jean in Medium Wash: Alright, you all know that I’m quite the fan of denim, but I think these might be my favorite pair of jeans ever. I wear these at least a couple times a week, and I’ve found that they are incredibly flattering and perfect with any outfit. These are true to size, but they’re actually pretty long. I always roll them up one cuff at the bottom, and I’m pretty tall, so just keep that in mind if you’re shorter or are thinking about purchasing them! I really hope BDG starts making these in another wash because they are seriously game changing.

I hope this post inspires some of your own shopping! Thanks for being patient with me as I get back to blogging and balance it all with my crazy busy life. You are the best, and I’m forever grateful to have those of you that read my posts each time I upload!

Talk to you soon!

Nothing But Excitement Over Here! (Life Update)

Hey everyone!

August has been a crazy month, and I can’t believe that it’s nearing its end! So much has gone on, and I haven’t blogged for the majority of this month, so let me update you…

My birthday was a little bit over a week ago, so there were a few days of celebrations and lots of time that I got to spend with family and friends. It was so special and great, but before this, I was mainly spending a lot of my time packing or squeezing in some last shifts at work. I finished up my sales job at a small local business that I’ve been working at for the past year and a half; I loved my job and had such a great time working there, and I’m sad to see it end, but I’m grateful that my first job was one that I loved so much!

A few days ago I went to Portland in order to move my twin sister into her college, which was super cool because I had actually never been besides a layover in the airport! I spent a couple days hanging out with my aunt and my mom after we moved her in, and the city was awesome. I’m so glad that I got to see the campus that my sister is living on and to meet some of her friends! My next mission is to get her to visit New York, though, as she’s never been and I’m desperate for her to see it.

Lastly, I’m moving to New York tomorrow and officially moving into my dorm room on Saturday which is SO exciting! I honestly can’t wait because I’ve dreamed of living in New York and studying the business side of the fashion industry for so long. I can’t wait for it to be a reality and to also meet some of the wonderful people I’ve been in touch with for months now!

As you can see, August has been a whirlwind of new adventures, fresh starts, and happy times. I’ve truly been so content lately, and even though this new chapter is a bit uncertain, I’m so excited to embrace it and see where it takes me! I can’t wait to keep you all updated, too.

I hope everyone has had as great of a month as I have.

Talk to you really soon (and when I’m in New York)!

To Dye For

Hey everyone!

Did anyone else go to summer camp and spend time outdoors doing fun activities, one of them being tie-dying shirts? Well, step aside, summer camp, because tie-dye is becoming so much more than just a camp staple.

Tie-dye has been everywhere lately, and it’s definitely going to be sticking around for a bit longer. I first saw stores with pieces at the beginning of summer, but now that it’s August (how is it already August?!) and stores are still dropping new items with the colorful print, it’s sure to stick around.

Tie-dye is super fun and a great way to elevate your style. I personally find myself drawn to monochromatic clothing for some reason, and I feel like tie-dye is such a simple and cool way to add a pop of color into an ordinary outfit. Pairing a bodysuit or tee with some cool jeans would look so awesome. I’ve also seen a lot of hoodies online that people seem to be loving. When I went and searched for items to include in this post, I noticed that practically every store I looked at had some tie-dye, so you’re not limited to the pieces I’ve shown.

How do you feel about it? Is the crazy and colorful pattern here to stay, or will it make an exit once fall rolls around?

Here’s what I’m showing:

Michael Stars Brittany Tee in Aster Primrose from Revolve

Superdown Lindy Tie Dye Bodysuit in Pink from Revolve

Tie Dye Long Sleeve Tee from Free People

Cozy Livin’ Mauve Purple Tie-Dye Tee from Lulus

Cozy Livin’ Mauve Purple Tie-Dye Joggers from Lulus

Lana Tie-Dye Bias Midi Skirt from Urban Outfitters

Nice and Natural: Dip Nail Review

Hello everyone!

Back in December, I uploaded this post talking all about my experience with acrylic nails and the pros and cons I faced while having them. However, in June, I decided that it was time to say goodbye to long nails. I had acrylics for a year at that point with no breaks in between, so to say my natural nails were looking a bit worse for wear is an understatement. They were short and weak, and I knew that it was time to let them grow. As much as I loved acrylics, being able to let my nails breathe feels amazing. And I realized that if I wanted to let them grow strong and healthy, I’d probably have to do some sort of treatment since they’d definitely break on their own.

Ah, now this is where the magical thing called dip powder comes in. If you’re caught up on the beauty scene, then you’ve likely heard of this. For those of you that haven’t, dip powder is a nail polish treatment where you quite literally dip your fingers into colored powder after a base coat is applied. This happens several times, and eventually your nails are topped off with a top coat.

I’ve gotten this done three times, and each time, it has lasted me at least two weeks. The picture above was taken a little over a week and a half of having my nails done. And honestly? They look pretty dang good to me. I love that my natural nails have been able to grow out under the dip powder, and I also love that they look great for weeks. Additionally, the price hasn’t increased much from what I paid when I got my acrylics filled. I’ve also found that there’s a great variety of colors; pretty much all of the gel colors where I go come in a dip form.

There’s also been some talk about whether or not the powder has proteins in it that can actually strengthen your nails and help them grow. I searched it up, and there seems to be mixed opinions about it, so keep taking your biotin while we wait for some new information to come in.

Have I sold you on dip powder manicures? Honestly, I just love that I can have a great manicure for weeks that allows my natural nails to stay long.

Hope this was informative for you 🙂

Four Years

Hello!

Since getting the notification on my phone that Emily’s Edge has turned four years old, I’ve been thinking about writing this post. However, I’ve been out of town and traveling for the past couple of weeks, and I knew this had to wait. But now that I’m back, I feel as if I can finally give this post the attention and detail it deserves.

It’s strange to think that this blog has been around for four years, mostly because I know how different my life is now compared to when I started my website. Four years ago, I was about to enter my freshman year of high school. I was almost fifteen years old, and I remember relying on my mom to drive me to different locations in order to take pictures of my outfits. I was starting to discover how much fashion really meant to me and how badly I wanted to put myself out there and share my own ideas.

It feels kind of crazy to sit here and compare where I was when I started to where I am now. Now, I’m almost nineteen. I’m moving to New York next month where I’ll be studying the business side of the fashion industry. My writing skills have improved, as well as my fashion taste. The design of Emily’s Edge has changed and evolved.

This site is different from four years ago, and so am I. But it isn’t bad different; it’s actually very good. Throughout the years, Emily’s Edge has remained a constant part of who I am and has helped me explore my passions even further. I’ve been able to share my ideas with others, and also to grow as an individual. There are many opportunities that I would not have had if it weren’t for the time and passion I have poured into this blog.

Above all, I am so grateful, and I don’t think there will ever be a time where I’m not. I’m thankful for you, the people who keep coming back to hear what I have to say and leave me feedback. I’m thankful that I have the privilege and opportunity to share my own ideas and get them out into the world. I’m thankful for all that I have learned about writing and fashion, and all that I have yet to learn.

Thank you for four years, and for sticking by my side as I’ve grown and as Emily’s Edge has grown. Not a day goes by where I don’t count my blessings.

Cheers to four years, and many more to come.

All the love as always,

-Emily Berrol
