As I mentioned in my last blog post, I have been loving Sally Hansen gel nail polish lately! I said that it was possible for me to do a review, and I decided why not? I have had this set for about three years now, and I can’t believe I haven’t already made a post about it! I will be including a ton of information regarding prices, how long they last, and if it’s worth it to invest in your own gel manicure set.

To start off with, I am going to discuss what comes in this set. You get: the first step nail polish, the second step nail polish in a color, the third step nail polish, a cuticle stick, a nail file, a gel manicure lamp, and nail cleanser pads. All of these things will help you get a complete gel manicure. You have to buy this whole set if you don’t have these things. There also will be additional prices for if you run out of any of the step nail polishes, or if you want to purchase more colors (step two).

This whole set costs about sixty dollars if you’re going to purchase it in a store. I have, however, seen some really good deals on these sets online that let you buy it for forty dollars or fifty. Definitely do your research on these prices before you buy one. They have been out for years, so some stores are definitely selling them cheaper.

Individual gel nail polishes themselves cost anywhere from ten dollars to thirteen dollars. They don’t get much cheaper than that if you’re buying from the Sally Hansen brand. But guess what? Other gel nail polishes from different brands also work with this set. I have two from Sensationail, and they work great. In general though, most gel nail polishes aren’t going to be as inexpensive as regular nail polishes.

As far as replacements go, more of my money has been spent on buying new colors rather than replacing items. To be honest, the only things you’ll need to replace will be the step one, two, and three polishes if they run out. I have only ever had to replace the step one and three polishes about once or twice in the past three years. I have only run out of a color once, and I didn’t replace it due to the fact that I have so many other colors (fourteen gel polishes in total). For the nail cleansing pads (it’s the photo above of the box with French on it. I didn’t notice until now that I forgot to switch the side to English!), you really don’t need to replace them because you can use rubbing alcohol to clean your nails.

So, in general, once you have the kit, you’re basically only going to be spending money on new colors that you want and the occasional replacement. The price is worth it, because the quality of the polish and kit is amazing. Also, the price that you pay is equivalent to getting your nails done in a salon at least three times, if not less.

How do you use the kit? Here are the steps:

  1. Clean your nails using rubbing alcohol or the cleansing pads before applying nail polish.
  2. Apply one coat of the step one polish, and then put in under the lamp.
  3. Apply as many coats as you need of the step two polish and put it under the lamp.
  4. Apply one coat of the step three polish and put it under the lamp.
  5. Clean your nails again with the rubbing alcohol or the cleansing pads.

Before you complete these steps, you may also want to push back your cuticles or file your nails.

It says that your nails can last weeks, but the longest mine have ever lasted were around six days, if not seven. That is extremely well for nail polish, considering that you do it yourself and don’t go to a salon.

There are a few things that can cause the chipping and peeling of your gel nails:

  1. Soaking your nails in hot water
  2. Getting the gel polish on your cuticles/around them
  3. Picking at your nails or the gel around them
  4. Going to the beach with them on
  5. Peeling off stickers and rubbing your nails against plastic things (unfortunately, this was something that I discovered as I pulled off a binder sticker)

My nails will always last me at least two days. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but some regular nail polishes chip by the second day you wear them.

To remove these, all you have to do is soak a cotton pad in nail polish remover, place it on your nail, and then wrap foil around it. They sell these, but you can easily make them at home. Although this isn’t great for your nails, I usually just let mine peel and chip naturally.

In general, I love this nail kit so much. The only negative thing is that your nails can break after. I have noticed though that gel polish can make your nails a little bit stronger!

I highly recommend this kit if you love doing your nails and want polish that will last longer!
